List of earthquakes in 1901

This is a list of earthquakes in 1901. Only magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquakes appear on the list. Exceptions to this are earthquakes which have caused death, injury or damage. Events which occurred in remote areas will be excluded from the list as they wouldn't have generated significant media interest. All dates are listed according to UTC time. Japan saw a great deal of activity this year. In spite of their being 14 magnitude 7.0+ events the death toll was once again low with most of the 125 deaths coming from China.

• A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Ecuador on January 7 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.8 struck south of Hokkaido, Japan on January 13 at a depth of 35.0 km.
• A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck British Columbia, Canada on January 18 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Yunnan Province, China on February 15 at a depth of 0.0 km. At least 101 people were killed and extensive damage was reported in the region especially at Dengchaun.
• A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Parkfield, California on March 3. The depth was unknown. Some damage was reported in the epicentral area.
• A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Gulf of California on March 5 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of the Lindi Region, Tanzania on March 16 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.4 - 6.7 earthquake struck Dobrich Province, Bulgaria on March 31 at a depth of 60 km. Four people died and 50 more were injured. There was fairly extensive damage with at least 1,200 homes destroyed.

April–June

• A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near Halmahera, Indonesia on April 5 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the Kuril Islands, Russia on April 5 at a depth of 35.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck eastern Xizang, China on April 21 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Kuril Islands, Russia on May 14 at a depth of 35.0 km.
• A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Solomon Islands on May 25 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on June 15 at a depth of 35.0 km.
• A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Ryukyu Islands, Japan on June 24 at a depth of 35.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.5 aftershock struck the Ryukyu Islands, Japan on June 24 at a depth 35.0 km.

July–September

• A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on August 9 at a depth of 35.0 km. A larger event struck later on in the day. Some damage was caused especially at Sannohe, Hachinohe and Nekishi. A small tsunami was generated.
• A magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia region on August 9 at a depth of 0.0 km. There were reports of several fatalities and some damage was also apparent in the region.
• A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on August 9 at a depth of 35.0 km. Eighteen people were killed, eight homes were destroyed, and another 615 damaged in Aomori Prefecture. There was extensive damage to the transport links in the area. The deaths and damage listed were also linked to the 7.2 quake earlier in the day.
• A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck north of Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea on August 10 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck south of Fiji on August 11 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Santa Cruz Islands on September 8 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• An earthquake struck Luzon, Philippines on September 10. The magnitude and depth were unknown. Damage was reported in Tayabas Province.
• A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on September 30 at a depth of 35.0 km.

October–December

• A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the border area of Honduras and Nicaragua on October 8 at a depth of 0.0 km. Some damage was reported in the area.
• A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near Greta Valley, South Island, New Zealand on November 15 at a depth of 0.0 km. One death was reported in the area as well as some severe damage.
• A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Molucca Sea, Indonesia on November 25 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 7.1 earthquake the Gulf of California on December 9 at a depth of 0.0 km.
• A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Luzon, Philippines on December 14 at a depth of 0.0 km. There was some reported damage in the area.
• A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Balikesir Province, Turkey on December 18. The depth was unknown. There was extensive damage in the area.
• A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Andreanof Islands, Alaska on December 31 at a depth of 0.0 km. There was some reported damage.
